For those who have celiac disease or gluten intolerance, taking gluten can trigger side effects. Celiac disease is an autoimmune problem. Celiac’s immune system regards gluten as a threat to the body. When the patient consumes gluten, the lining of the small intestine wall will be attacked so that the body can not absorb the nutrients it needs. Side effects that appear in people with celiac disease include:
- Stomach ache
- Weight loss
- In children the growth is inhibited
- Often feel tired
While the possible complications are:
- Iron deficiency
- Lack of folate and vitamin B12
- Baby’s weight at birth is less
- The likelihood of colon cancer
As for those who do not have celiac disease but are quite sensitive to foods containing gluten protein, then the person has gluten intolerance. Possible side effects in gluten intolerant sufferers are more or less the same as celiac disease, except that there is no damage to the small intestine.
Gluten free food products are for those who have problems with gluten protein. If you do not experience the condition, you should not need to consume gluten-free food products. In addition to not providing special benefits, gluten-free food products usually have a fairly expensive price.
