Food poisoning definition is a condition that arises from eating foods that have been contaminated by infectious organisms, such as bacteria, viruses and parasites. Contamination can occur when food is being processed or cooked incorrectly.

Contamination that generally occurs in cases of food poisoning caused by:

  • Bacteria Campylobacter, Salmonella, Escherichia coli (E. coli), Listeria, Clostridium botulinum (botulinum) and Shigella.
  • Norovirus and rotavirus.
  • Cryptosporidium parasite, Entamoeba histolytica, and Giardia.

  • Fast food, for example cuts of cooked meat, soft cheeses, and packaged sandwiches.

  • Raw eggs.
  • Scallops and seafood are raw

Symptoms of Food Poisoning

Symptoms of food poisoning can begin sometime after eating up to three days after eating contaminated food. Common symptoms include:

  • Feeling nauseous and vomiting.
  • Experiencing diarrhea.
  • Pain or abdominal cramps.

Causes of Food Poisoning

Here are some things that can cause food poisoning:

  • Not storing food in the right temperature, for example not stored in the refrigerator, especially meat products and dairy products.
  • Do not cook food evenly, especially poultry meat-poultry, burgers, and sausages.
  • Leaves cooked food in a room with warm temperatures for too long.
  • Eat foods that are past the expiration period.
  • Cross-contamination, for example, uses a raw meat-cutting knife to slice bread or store raw meat over ready-to-eat foods so that the liquid from the meat trickles down into the food underneath.
  • Use an unwashed cutting board, especially after use to cut raw meat.
  • People who are sick or with dirty hands touch the food.

Treatment of Food Poisoning

In most cases, food poisoning does not require special treatment. To relieve symptoms, you can rest sufficiently and drink plenty of fluids because if dehydrated, then the symptoms will get worse and the recovery will become longer.
People who are susceptible to dehydration should be given oral rehydration fluids (ORS). Oralite works to replace glucose, salt, and other essential minerals lost by vomiting and diarrhea. For the time being, you should avoid regular food until it feels better. You can eat easily digested foods such as porridge.

Here are some symptoms related to food poisoning that require you to get treatment:

  • You have a high fever.

Food poisoning can also have severe effects, especially in people with weakened immunity. Among these are diabetics, kidney failure, heart failure, HIV, cancer, those over 65, and infants.
